I'm an Adult with Type 1 Diabetes

The worst thing about Diabetes….

January 30th, 2009

You know for me, it’s not testing my blood sugars seven times a day (or more) or the injecting myself with insulin four times (or more) a day. These things are straight forward and the technology has come so far in the last 15 years that they are also relatively painless.

The worst thing for me is the math! You know, working out how much carbohydrate I’m about to eat against how much insulin I need to take to cover it and then taking in to consideration what my blood sugars are before I eat. Then I have to consider how much fat and fibre is in the food! But wait! What if I’m going to be more active that usual after I eat then I need to take less insulin.

I want to know why pharmacuetical companys are researching alternative ways to take insulin, namely the inhaled insulin (which didn’t do very well) and now an insulin pill! How is that going to make life better for people with type 1 diabetes? I want a machine that, when I tell it what I’m going to eat, how much I’m going to eat and what time of the day I’m going to eat it at, that will tell me how much insulin I should take?

Surely, someone, somewhere has thought of this and is working on it!!!

New Year Resolutions

January 14th, 2009

Everyday I resolve to do better with my diabetes and some days it’s a struggle, some days I give up and some days I really try. When the new year starts I feel like I’ve been given a clean slate to make resolutions that I can stick to every day and therefore they will become “easy” and I won’t have to struggle with my diabetes so much.

Well, this year I’m keeping my resolutions simple because from all the information I’ve read it’s much easier to make small changes overnight than to completely change your life overnight.

So, I resolve to try and get more sleep, and to not pick at the kids food.

I feel that if I ad-ere to these two “simple” resolutions that I will bring my HbA1c down to my personal target of 6%. It’s currently at 7.4%.

Fingers crossed.
